Join RLL and Sierra Harvest on our ranch in Nevada County, CA for an Ag Skills workshop all about Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGD’s) with UCCE advisors Dan Macon and Carolyn Whitesell.

This class will cover puppy selection, breeds, the bonding process, training and troubleshooting problem behaviors, nutrition and care, and liability/nuisance issues.

Dr. Carolyn Whitesell is a human-wildlife interactions advisor with the University of California Cooperative Extension, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Carolyn’s research and extension program focuses on mitigating conflict between people and wildlife in both rural and suburban settings, with an emphasis on protecting livestock. She first worked with LGDs at the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Namibia. 

Dan Macon is a livestock and natural resources advisor with UC Cooperative Extension, based in the Central Sierra region. Dan’s research and extension program focuses on targeted grazing systems, livestock-predator conflict mitigation, virtual fencing systems, and ranch business viability. In addition to his research and extension work with livestock guardian dogs, Dan has used LGDs in his own sheep and goat operation for more than 20 years.
