With 900 species worldwide, 60 species of Ceanothus are represented in California. Ceanothus are drought-hardy and many species’ leaves are coated with a flammable resin that fuels fire. They have a tendency to “take over” and it makes maneuvering a thicket at best painful and at worst impossible. The good news is the goats love ‘em and will eat them year round, with the best time to hit them being winter.
